In italiano: Iryna Shuvalova è una figura centrale della scena poetica ucraina. Endsongs marks an undeniable turning point in her poetics, tied to the large-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation — an event that has upended the existence of tens of millions of people, after which nothing can ever be as it was before: "a reflective poetry, in no hurry to flee from the inescapability of the present, in which verses often grow longer so that one might try to comprehend the incomprehensible of what is happening before everyone's eyes, even if there are those who choose to look the other way" (from the presentation by Alessandro Achilli and Yaryna Grusha).

Un popolo intero oggetto della forza, spogliato di sé, costretto a non ricono scere più i propri luoghi, la propria vita di prima, come per una continuità infranta per sempre: è ciò che testimonia la poe tessa ucraina Iryna Shuvalova in Canzoni alla fine (traduzione e cura di Alesssan dro Achilli e Yaryna Grusha).
È un libro doloroso, anzi tragico, dove di continuo sembra rivivere l'abisso di Paul Celan [...]. La voce della poesia è quasi ammu tolita: «cosa c'è da dire quando/tutto in torno grida/ le sirene suonano/ il fumo si innalza/ i treni di evacuazione stridu- lano/le bocche storte delle/ finestre rot- te ululano//[...]».
La guerra sembra ri- chiudere ogni spazio. Ma c'è modo di ri- cordare a noi lettori che non siamo al ri- paro, che la guerra, nonostante un nemico interessato alla nostra acquie- scenza, riguarda anche noi: «l'europa ha paura/ l'europa indietreggia// mentre cerca disperata/ di ripulirsi gli schizzi rossi/ dalle sue belle scarpette tutte luci- de».
Se qualcuno è costretto a cantare canzoni della fine, nessuno può essere spettatore innocente.

An entire people subjected to force, stripped of themselves, compelled to no longer recognise their own places, their own former life, as if a continuity broken forever: this is what Ukrainian poet Iryna Shuvalova bears witness to in Endsongs (translated and edited by Alessandro Achilli and Yaryna Grusha).
It is a painful, indeed tragic book, where the abyss of Paul Celan seems to continually resurface [...]. The voice of poetry is almost silenced: "what is there to say when / everything around cries out / the sirens sound / the smoke rises / the evacuation trains screech / the twisted mouths of / broken windows howl // [...]".
War seems to close off every space. But there is a way of reminding us readers that we are not sheltered, that the war — despite an enemy with an interest in our acquiescence — concerns us too: "europe is afraid / europe retreats // as it desperately tries / to wipe the red splashes / from its pretty little polished shoes".
If someone is forced to sing songs of the end, no one can be an innocent bystander.

Shuvalova nella sua nota al testo parla dell’eroismo e del coraggio, dell’orrore animalesco, delle battaglie che decidono i destini di intere città e persino Paesi, anche le piccole cose, quelle umane, che continuano a esistere. Raccoglie tutte le sue forze e lotta con le armi che possiede, «convinta che la letteratura ucraina sull’invasione russa, tanto in prosa quanto in poesia, sia una letteratura grande, meritevole di essere letta in diverse lingue, anche quando questa guerra sarà finita da tempo e le ferite che ha causato si saranno risanate».
Come non ammettere che gli ucraini per secoli hanno continuato a scrivere e mantenere in serbo la loro lingua per evitare la cancellazione della propria letteratura, nonostante l’eliminazione sistematica di intellettuali e uomini di cultura da parte dei russi già durante i tempi dei Soviet.
Per la Shuvalova la poesia è l’estremo avamposto della salvezza, della memoria, della storia, la sua esistenza è garanzia d’eternità ed esistenza del popolo ucraino.

In her note to the text, Shuvalova speaks of heroism and courage, of animalistic horror, of battles that decide the fates of entire cities and even countries, but also of the small, human things that continue to exist. She gathers all her strength and fights with the weapons she possesses, "convinced that Ukrainian literature on the Russian invasion, both in prose and in poetry, is a great literature, worthy of being read in different languages, even when this war has long been over and the wounds it has caused have healed."
How can one deny that Ukrainians for centuries have continued to write and preserve their language to avoid the erasure of their literature, despite the systematic elimination of intellectuals and men of culture by the Russians already during Soviet times.
For Shuvalova, poetry is the ultimate outpost of salvation, of memory, of history — its existence is a guarantee of the eternity and existence of the Ukrainian people.
